The Organized Work Environment (OWE) (2)

Oct 10, 2024 9:21:41 AM | The Organized Work Environment (OWE) - Finally, Work That Flows

For months, we’ve been talking about the pain points of modern work - our super fast computers with super ‘smart’ apps, increasingly powered by super intelligent AI agents. But it’s all still disjointed. We’re still the glue that pieces it all together. We’re still the ones planning, strategizing, linking, hyperlinking, aligning, sharing, prompting, and updating. Even if our computers help with any of those tasks, it’s piecemeal - and still app-specific, not work-centric (or project-centric.)

The advanced tools on our desktops remain fragmented and siloed. We spend our time searching for context, switching and surfing between endless tabs and windows, while getting bombarded by incessant notifications that interrupt our flow. This constant fragmentation disrupts our ability to focus, collaborate, and be truly productive. It keeps us from being our most creative, talented selves and takes a toll on our well-being.

We’ve already hinted at the solution to this ever-growing problem that we’ve been building behind the scenes - The Organized Work Environment (OWE). By now, you’re probably aware that it’s not just another productivity tool. It’s a completely new system, a new foundation for how we work with computers. It’s the desktop environment we need to flip the current fragmented, cognitively draining, backwards workflow. It’s the environment that aligns with how our brains naturally function, carrying part of the cognitive load so we can focus on the work that really matters. It’s the digital workspace that supports how we’re meant to work.

So, What is The OWE?

The OWE isn’t a new type of computer, and you won’t need any new hardware. It’s also not ‘just another app’ on your desktop. Yes, it is a downloadable application, but it doesn’t simply fit into your current Graphical User Interface (GUI). Instead, the Reframe application transforms your GUI into an entirely new environment. Think of it as a wraparound for your current desktop, one that introduces an environment infused with contextual awareness. This contextual awareness is powered by a new language and protocol for your computer, allowing it to identify and process information in a new way - automatically linking relevant apps, tools, and data that belong together for a particular project or initiative, and organizing them into Streams.

Let’s say you’re in marketing and you’re working on a product launch. You’ve likely got strategy docs in Google Docs, notes in Notepad, metrics in Microsoft Excel, roadmaps captured in PPT, sprints captured in JIRA, messaging in email threads, and updates in Slack messages. Today, you’d have to manually open each app, find the relevant information, wrap your head around the context and then start working. It’s a backwards process: Find the Tools → Gather Context → Get to Work.

With Reframe’s OWE, however, you'd be able to log onto your computer and perhaps open up a “Product Launch” Stream. This Stream will have everything you need - messages, emails, docs, apps, updates, and the full context - all in one place. No more searching. No more hyperlinking. No more switching. It lets you work the way your brain naturally functions: Choose the Work → Gather Context → Use the Tools.

And the best part? Any new piece of information, associated with that Stream, regardless of where it exists or which app it lives in, is automatically added, keeping your Stream updated in real time. Everyone else working on the Stream will be updated, too - and vice versa. Oh, and you won’t even need to prompt any of your AI agents - they’ll be updated as well. Every human and every AI tool collaborating on this Stream will be auto-prompted.

What Makes The OWE Different?

Traditional desktop GUIs were never designed to handle the complexity of today’s knowledge work. That’s why your computer still feels fragmented - every app, file, and window is a separate world you must manually connect.

Here’s where the Organized Work Environment changes everything:

1. Stream-Based Work

Workflows are organized into Streams that mimic the natural flow of a project.

Forget about having to piece everything together manually. The OWE organizes your work into Streams - everything related to a project or task is grouped together. Whether it’s your emails, documents, spreadsheets, project management tools, or to-do list, all relevant info is linked and visible within the same context.

2. Visible, Actionable Contexts

Hidden, fragmented context is made visible, integrated, and actionable.

Without Reframe, context is fragmented across apps and documents or held in our heads, making it difficult to track, incorporate, and act upon (think of notes on Trello cards, comments in documents, or Slack messages and emails.)

Reframe changes this by making context visible and explicit - essentially “articulating” it into existence (more on that in a future post.) This allows users to see the complete picture of their work, manage context effectively, and act on it. By continuously capturing and integrating pieces of context, Reframe ensures that the full context of your workflow is always up-to-date and actionable. No more searching for files, re-reading old emails, or wondering where that critical piece of information was stashed. It’s all visible, integrated, and actionable.

3. Shareable, Coordinated Contexts

Seamlessly and automatically update contexts for both humans and AI agents while also enabling manual sharing and coordination.

In today’s world, we have to manually organize, copy/paste, update, and retain context across apps and people, leading to inefficiencies, lost information and silos.

Reframe eliminates all that by enabling seamless communication and coordination. All team members and AI agents are up-to-date with the latest information in real time.

This feature allows us to share and prompt others (both people and AI agents) with relevant context within the shared space of the Stream. It enables direct communication and awareness between collaborators, all working within the same context but with views tailored to their needs. This includes both automated and manual sharing of context, making collaboration more intuitive and efficient.

Here, there is no burden of organizing - where work is done and where context is held happens in the same place. You know exactly where you left off and what needs to be done next, without the mental effort of keeping track. And anyone contributing to the context helps everyone else in this coherent, virtuous cycle.

Unlocking 10X Productivity and Creativity

With the OWE, we’re not just aiming for incremental gains in productivity. Our goal is to create 10X improvements by solving the deeper issues of cognitive overload, fragmented tools, decision fatigue, and a digital workspace that no longer serves us - a workspace that holds us back from realizing the potential of advanced technologies like AI.

In an OWE, the infusion of contextual awareness into your digital workspaces means that apps, humans, and AI agents all work seamlessly together. Imagine AI agents that don’t just respond to prompts, but “understand” the full scope of your work. With access to the context of your projects, meetings, documents, and goals, these agents can help you strategize, plan, and even contribute to higher-level thinking - like a true collaborator. It’s like having J.A.R.V.I.S. from Ironman at your side, ready to anticipate your needs, suggest new approaches, and support your creative process in real time.

This kind of environment doesn’t just unlock productivity - it unleashes human capacity, empowering us to focus on creativity, problem-solving, and innovation. It brings us closer to a future where AI doesn’t just automate tasks, execute simple commands or respond to isolated prompts, but engages in more strategic and complex forms of support - like helping us plan projects, analyze trends, synthesize information from multiple sources, and even propose new ideas based on patterns they recognize across our work.

This is how the OWE unlocks human potential - by providing an environment that aligns with your natural flow of work, one where contextual awareness is built in, so apps, humans, and AI agents all function in sync - allowing us to tackle more ambitious goals, work more fluidly, and innovate in ways that previously felt unattainable. With the OWE, we truly harness the power of technology to support our growth and evolution as a species.

What’s Next?

We’re excited to bring the first iteration of the Organized Work Environment (OWE) into the hands of our early users as we prepare for a limited, private Alpha release. We believe that once you experience the flow and ease of a context-aware workspace, you won’t want to go back. Our vision is to shift from a digital environment that demands a lot of mental energy to one that gives energy back. This is just the beginning of a new way of working - one where technology finally aligns with the way you think and work.

Stay tuned as we’ll be sharing more details about the technology behind the OWE in upcoming posts, helping you understand the innovative mechanisms that power this shift.
